“Kottayam” is a name composed of two words, “Kotta” which means fort and “Akkam” meaning inside. The landscape of Kottayam is a combination of three types of land composition – low, middle and high, giving it an exotic look. Situated on the southern part of Kerala, Kottayam is surrounded by Ernakulam in the north, Idukki district in the east and Alphuzza and Pathanamthitta districts in the south. On its western side is the Vembanad Lake and a canal connects the Lake with Kottayam.
